This year the school has two rock bands - 'Electric Ivy' and 'Interrock'. Both bands performed at the Smokefree Rockquest in July and they are now busy preparing for Bandquest on November 16 in Hamilton. This is a new competition for primary and intermediate school bands, which is being organised by the Rockquest management, to give these students their own performing platform rather than just the Rockquest competition, which is dominated by secondary school bands.
'Electric Ivy' also performed on October 21 at the Fanzone for a small but supportive audience. This band consists of Sapphire Bristow (vocals), Joshua McMillan (guitar), Gabi Jones (bass) and Ryan Harris (drums). Gabi is also the writer of the lyrics for both the original songs that the band are rehearsing and I hope she continues doing this in the future - she has great talent.
All music classes are now practising their songs for the band skills task, and it is great to see the focus and effort that many of the students are putting into each song so that they can present their best work during sharing sessions. Students who enjoy playing instruments often ask if they can have lessons, and I encourage them to enrol in the school's after-hours tuition programme. Some have done so and are making real progress learning their chosen instruments.
'Til next time
